What were some of the artistic contributions of the Vikings and what was the significance?
The Viking artwork was sometimes made out of stone. The stone artwork had different patterns on it. It was always unique. Vikings artwork wasn't bland, it was very colorful and the colors popped out. The Vikings specialized in wood carving. There were very talented in art. According to The Vikings, by Virginia Schomp, "The early Scandinavians were remarkable artisans, or crafts. The Vikings had many types of meaningful art including stone art, animal art, portraits, and their art was usually honored for those of the dead. The Vikings were always looking for new artwork. They had a different type of Alphabet called the Runic Alphabet. In modern day times, artists normally paint the same or identical type of designs. On the other hand, vikings painted unique drawings that had very big meanings and were always different. According to the book The Vikings, by James M Deem, "Viking artwork ranged from small handmade objects to monster-headed long-ships, from beautiful fabrics to carved stones. Even houses might be considered works of art. Surprisingly, much of what historians know about Viking art comes from an unusual source: ship burials." The Vikings didn't really think much about what their artwork was worth. If modern day people had a chance to collect a lot of Viking artwork, it would retail for a lot of money. This connects to the real world because when little kids draw pictures, they are just little splotches of paint. If Vikings drew painting like that, they would sell for a lot of money.

The Vikings and the Egyptians were similar and different in terms of art. They are similar because their art was always strange but interesting. For example, Vikings liked to paint portraits of animals that were not yet discovered. Also, the Egyptians mostly made sculptures of other famous Egyptians. The sculptures were always very well put together and they looked a little bizarre because of the way they designed the art. Egyptian sculptures were never smiling, they also almost always incorporated gold in the art. This is interesting because they didn't really change. They just used the same colors each time, and the art always had a straight face. This all ties together because they were always interesting. They are also alike because they had fancy sculptures and paintings. The Vikings painted fancy patterns. Their art was very eye opening, they had very bright colors and the patterns were always 3D. The Egyptians made very fancy sculptures. The art was a display or organization and perfection. There were little to no mistakes in the art of the Egyptians.
The Vikings were different in many reasons. The Vikings liked to draw animals, stone art, and portraits. The Vikings art was usually honored for the dead. The Vikings were unique in terms of art because they drew objects which were not living in their lifetime. For example, instead of painting a normal snake, the Vikings would add arms and legs while drawing it to make it look more interesting. The Vikings also are different from the Egyptians because Vikings art was almost always colorful. It would sometimes be unpainted but they did that because they liked to differentiate. Switching gears, the Egyptians liked to make royal sculptures. Unlike the Vikings, the Egyptians were bland. They used very dark colors that didn't stand out. For example, the colors on their sculpture would look slightly faded. Something that is very unique about the Egyptians is they didn't mean for their art to be seen. For example, they weren't planning for humans to discover Egyptian artwork. In fact, they didn't even know about the future humans. The art was designed to benefit the Egyptian God and Goddesses. According to Khan Academy, "... it is imperative to remember that the majority of these works were never intended to be seen—that was simply not their purpose." The Egyptians were somewhat different than the Vikings in art. |
